There are certain bands of whom it is fair to say any new release is eagerly and impatiently awaited... So when Émilie Laforest of Montreal-based alt-rock duo Forêt announced "a secret" via social media, it's probably an understatement to suggest that one click later I had landed on the band's bandcamp page.

It's probably safe to say that Forêt's 2013 eponymous debut album was incredibly well received (** coughs **), garnering award nominations from both the ADISQ and GAMIC, and appearing in Blog year lists from both myself and the Filles Sourires team, to name but two...

And now Émilie and partner Joseph Marchand are back with "Un Secret", available as a free download via bandcamp. Once again, the pair describe a dark and disturbing aural landscape, yet one that is at the same time unnervingly reassuring and comforting - walking as does the tightrope between our subconscious dreams and nightmares.

Renowned poet Kim Doré again provides the ethereal lyrics, Émilie's haunting vocals adds the texture to which Joseph Marchand weaves an evocative soundtrack - Staccato drums and high-hat over which are laid rich swirling synthesisers and soft guitar...


"Un secret" serves as a teaser for the band's second album that the pair are busily working on in the studio. To say the new album is going to be enthusiastically awaited is I suspect a classic example of British reserve...
