Hôtel Morphée

One of my favourite brooding, Gothic - and yes, Francophone bands - returns this autumn with a brand new album and a new sound that is sure to leave a lasting impression...

Montréal-based Hôtel Morphée release the long-awaited follow-up to one of last year’s finest albums (IMHO of course - but as this is my Blog, it's the opinion that matters) “Des histoires de fantômes,” with the September release of “Rêve américain.”

While still dark and brooding, the new album promises to reveal a more indie-pop sound yet retaining the edgy undercurrent of their earlier works. As a teaser, the band have just released a thumping single, “Dernier jour,” that hints at the disjoint between the dream (the "Rêve" of the album's title) and the cold, sobering light of reality.

As to be expected, the concept is deliciously subversive.

There’s that trademarked and liberal use of syncopated rhythms of orchestral strings, but this time around they’re married to a distinctive rockier beat and with Laurence Nerbonne’s vocals taking on a new-found distinctive rasping and at times sultry (thanks to the chorus' subtle added reverb) edge.

There's a video clip to coincide with the single's release. It's dark, moody, deliciously disturbing and overlaid with one killer of a soundtrack...
