Laurine

Any artist who states that their record label is their bedroom and announces that their debut disc will be released when it is ready, although - like waiting for Christmas in January - it may be a long wait, deserves to be checked-out. This most definitely is the case with jeune lilloise singer-songwriter-composer Laurine Pilarski who has showcased a handful of songs via Bandcamp as a teaser for her (eventually) forthcoming EP...

The songs featured are the EP's title track, "Tout bas", "Partir en mer", the utterly and achingly beautiful "La fille à l'arrière des berlines" and the English-language "Just friends", which not only suggests that Laurine is multitalented, she's also effortlessly multilingual. (These last two tracks are live recordings from what appears to have been a rather intimate and well-received soirée in her home town of Lille.)

All the songs not only highlight Laurine's honey-dripped vocals, but also her songwriting and composition skills; incredibly soothing, wistful and intimate - perhaps this is what her bio means when it suggests that ...her sorrows, they're yours. Her songs, they're talking about you... - and all are so perfectly balanced; the sweetness of her voice is perfectly matched by Romain Parmentier's acoustic guitar (not to mention the gentle sound of the kalimba). There's a tranquility to her sound that is just perfect for sitting and staring at the beach as the waves gently crash ashore.

To be honest I don't know that much about Laurine, save  that - obviously multitalented - she has co-written the script and screenplay for the court-métrage
(short-film) "Craquer pour elle "("Lovestruck"), while her SoundCloud page - or rather her pseudonym 'Chicago May' hints at a sense of the dramatic. Either way, perhaps it is safe to say that Laurine truly is "... a pop girl at 33 1/3 rpm filmed in 16 mm..."

Intriguingly, Laurine lists amongst her musical influences Emilie Simon - with whom she is at times uncannily similar - and interestingly the tormented geniuses that were Nick Drake and Elliott Smith - which is not only noticeable on the totally beguiling "Just friends" -
but is one she also shares with the equally bewitching Globelamp

Laurine Pilarski. Here's an artist who it is going to be more than worth keeping an eye (and ear) out for - on both sides of La Manche...

  1. How can you not love a singer who sounds like a young Vanessa Paradis?
